“The Internship” is a story about underdogs, misfits, and the disconnect that our generation has with the older generation when it comes to technology. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play newly out-of-work salesmen who (miraculously) land an internship with Google. Though most of the film was shot on location, little else of it has to do with Google or its internship program. It’s a fictional story with its setting and two big name actors as its main selling point. Most of the merits lie in Wilson and Vaughn’s fast-talking and somewhat out-there humor (the interview scene was my favorite). Despite the fact that their characters are a bit outdated, technologically, they somehow manage to sell themselves and their ‘can-do’ attitude to some twenty-something year olds that seem to have no concept of “real life.” Though I enjoyed seeing Google and the creative campus that they boast, “The Internship” lacks even more realistic elements than the heavily dramatized Facebook in “The Social Network.” I would have to say that “The Internship” was more anticipated than the movie presents and I was a little disappointed by the lack of depth (both cinematically and humorously). The references to "Flashdance" were a bit outdated considering most of the 20-year-old demographic that this movie reaches out to have probably never seen "Flashdance." The substitution of Google with a made-up tech company would have helped to let the audience know that the movie was in on a joke to poke fun at companies instead of belittling a real one.
After watching “The Internship,” I realized that the plot parallels “Monsters University” and I think MU captures the misfits and underdogs much better and more genuinely. I don’t want to say too much more about it because I realize that MU hasn’t come out and I don’t want to spoil it!
Overall, “The Internship” was an ok movie but leaves the viewer with nothing more than a cliché and hankering for some of those cute, geeky Nooglers that made debuts and breakout roles in this film.
At the movies, I also saw a few more previews for summer movies that look pretty good: Grown Ups 2, The Way Way Back, The Heat, & We're the Millers! This cinema summer is looking pretty awesome!
