After apartment hunting on Saturday, we went out to see “This is the End.” We wanted to see “Monsters University” but because it was still opening weekend, the tickets were nearly sold out. No matter, I wanted to see “This Is the End” anyway. Everyone was posting great things about it on Facebook and it did not disappoint.
I’m usually not a big fan of the crude humor genre – think Hangover, Superbad etc. I have a very narrow preference for comedy. I love Demetri Martin because I think his humor is clever. It’s smart, it takes something thinking to get it and he doesn’t rely on cursing to be funny.
Though “This is the End” has its moments of crude humor (I mean come on, there’s a huge monster with rock penis), I found it playing on other tropes of humor as well. There’s a scene with a gun where the tension climbs so high, I found it hard to breathe. I guess my problem is that sometimes I go into these movies expecting more than I should. It’s supposed to be a silly comedy made to make the audience laugh. There’s little more than a childhood lesson to be learned to be nice to others and be a good friend.
It helps that the cast is hilarious, all with their own forms of comedy (though I didn't care for Danny McBride's character much), and there were quite a few good-looking faces to look at. Most refreshing was seeing Emma Watson as a BAMF and bullying the group of guys to ensure her own survival. This isn’t a very well written review – I don’t have much to say other than it does exactly what it promises: provide a movie that’s full of laughs. “This is the End” is a movie I would reconsider watching once it comes out on DVD.
